First, the myth

Shared hobbies don't make friendships

Most matching tools pair people by common interests, hobbies, or traditional personality tests. The research says those things don't actually predict whether two people will connect.

If all that connects you and another person is your love of skiing, then you are just two people on a ski lift without much else to talk about. The same goes for being in the same major, liking the same shows, or both being "an ENFJ." Surface similarities are easy to measure — they just don't do much.

What actually works

Compatibility is how you see the world

The friendships that click are between people who see, experience, and make sense of the world in similar ways.

Two people watch the same scene unfold in a dining hall. One instantly notices the social dynamics — who's in charge, who's uncomfortable. Another notices that someone needs help. A third registers whether things are orderly or chaotic. These "lenses" are the mental filters you use automatically, hundreds of times a day, without ever thinking about them.

When someone shares your lenses, everything gets easier: conversation flows, jokes land, you feel understood rather than merely tolerated. That felt sense of "this person just gets it" is what researchers can now measure — and what Resonance is built to find.

The evidence comes from two directions. Carolyn Parkinson and her colleagues put friends and strangers in a scanner and showed them all the same videos: friends' brains responded in strikingly similar ways — similar enough that you could work out who was friends with whom from the brain responses alone. And a 2022 paper in Psychological Review lays out the theory underneath that finding: shared ways of construing the world are much of what lets two people understand each other without effort.

Who's behind this

Inspired by decades of
social neuroscience research

Resonance was created by Matthew Lieberman, a UCLA Professor of Psychology and one of the founders of the field of social neuroscience. He has spent 25+ years studying how our brains make us the social creatures we are — including why social connection is as fundamental a need as food and shelter.

Alarmed by how many students report feeling lonely on campuses full of people, he built Resonance to put that science to work: finding the people around you that you're mathematically most likely to become friends with — if given the chance.

Why this matters

What loneliness costs

Being surrounded by people and still feeling alone is one of the most common experiences in college, and one of the least talked about. It is not a small thing, and the research is fairly blunt about why.

Mental health. These are the consequences people expect, and they are real. In college students, loneliness is tied to depression, to anxiety and to suicidality — not as a vague background mood, but as something that can be predicted from how connected a student feels.

Physical health. These are the ones that surprise people, because we file loneliness under the health problems of old age. It doesn't belong only there. In young adults it shows up in the immune system, in inflammation, in blood pressure — the body answering isolation the way it answers other kinds of threat.

School, and then work. It shows up in how life actually goes. Loneliness, and the thin social integration behind it, are linked to whether students stay enrolled and whether they graduate, and to exam scores and grades along the way. The campus research is the clearest, but nothing about this is peculiar to campuses: the first weeks of a new job or a new city ask a person the same question, and answer it the same way.

Universities have answered all this mostly with counselling, mentoring, clubs and orientation. Those are worth having, and they have been in place for decades — the whole time this was getting worse. When people are lonely they do not want therapy. They want friends.
