Why mixers and icebreakers don't move the needle

A meta-analysis of 50 randomized loneliness interventions ranked four approaches by effect size. The approach most campus programming relies on — simply increasing social contact — is the one that works least.

Putting lonely people in a room together is the intuitive intervention, and it barely works. What works is engaging how people see and make sense of the social world — which is precisely the dimension Resonance measures and matches on. The mechanics

How it works on your campus

1 · A private, gated community

Your community is restricted to your school's email domain. Participation is entirely opt-in — students join themselves. You never share rosters, contact lists, or student records with us.

2 · One 10–15 minute survey

Each student completes a survey measuring how they see and interpret the world — the dimension that actually predicts connection. The algorithm then computes a compatibility score for every pair of students in the community.

3 · Compatible pods & guided sessions

Students are placed in small, highly compatible groups with in-app chat and structured conversation experiences — deployable in a single class, a first-year cohort, an orientation-scale event, or campus-wide. Phones are the only required hardware.

Administrative lift is deliberately minimal. Deployments run in classes of 40, orientation cohorts of thousands, or anything between. Your team's role is essentially to say yes and send one announcement — Resonance handles onboarding, matching, and the student experience.
